The past two Saturday’s I have “hung out” with Peter and his family. In this photo you can see Peter with “one” of his daughters : Martela. Martela is a cutie and reminds me very much of little Emma (John’s daughter). This photo was taken in Peter’s offcice, which is across the road from UNITECH, so for the past two Saturday’s I have walked to his office, had a coffee and then headed of into Lae. Saturday’s in Lae are pretty busy as it is the main market day. Please see Photo Album for Lae for some photos I took Saturday at the markets. Peter likes a bargain so we normally pop in to a clearance sale or two. The markets are a great place to shop for fresh food and last Saturday there were a couple of stalls that were selling cooked bat, yes cooked bat !!! I settled for a nice some passion fruit and pineapple instead.
In the afternoon we took a drive to a village outside of Lae with two of Peter’s friends as there was someone selling two Casuary chicks and Peter was looking at buying these for his home, possibly to be used as a bride price for one of his teenage daughters. Unfortunately the woman that was selling the casuaries was not there so Peter will have to go back another day. In the evening I was invited over to Peter’s place for dinner and it was a feast !!! Have you ever tried casava ?? Very nice. There was also cooked banana and yams and taro root, chicken and stir fry and also what Peter and me have referred to “The Prototype”, a piece of bamboo filled with greens and beef cooked on the fire…. delicious !! Peter assures me that the bamboo prototype is now ready to move into full production !!! Yum, yum and yum. At about 10pm Peter was driving me back to UNITECH and when we come through the main gate a truck sped off (with lots of security guards), we found out from one of the security guards on the gate that there had been a carjacking. I found out the next morning that the car was recovered (thanks to the security guards in the speeding truck). For those people that care for my safety please note that I slept very well that night and no skid marks on the underpants !!!!
PNG definitely the land of the Unexpected.
