Last night’s dinner….

If there is one thing I love about PNG it’s the fruit. All fruit is organic and there is an incredible variety. As a rule every 2nd night I have a big plate of fruit for dinner and every other night I head down to the students mess and eat with them.
The photo you see is what I actually had for dinner last night with fruits purchased from the local markets on campus and from the main markets in Lae. You can see the following in the photo:
Custard Apple: the best custard apple I have ever eaten, sweat and juicy and the size of a small melon !!
Pawpaw: average about K1 (or about 40c). Mostly the size of a rugby ball or larger. The sweetest juiciest pawpaw I have ever eaten. Pawpaw seeds are a natural source of quinine so I have a spoonful of these a day. Great anti-malarial food.
Pineapple: what can I say, better than the pineapple I had in Sabah earlier this year. And cheap as chips. My gardener Simon planted about 4 pineapple trees in my backyard at home. He says that they will start bearing fruit in about 12 months. Everything here grows so quickly !!
Passionfruit: bigger than the ones at home but of a slightly different texture. Not the same taste either. Prefer the passionfruit from Oz.
Rambhutan: (correct spelling?). Similar to Lychees (maybe even the same fruit). Again, sweet, juicy and cheap.
This big plate of fruit would have cost me around the equivalent of $1 !!!
Are you jealous yet ?
