This morning I visited a PNG dentist for the 2nd time !! I live to tell the story !! The impression I'm getting is that a visit to the dentist for a national is a very unusual experience. Most people that I have asked and these have been adults, have never been to a dentist !! Here I am in PNG for 2x months and already I have been twice !! What's the matter with me ?
Anyway, as I was lying in the dentist's chair staring at the mould covered ceiling and walls and looking at some of the instruments that looked like they hadn't been cleaned since Jesus was a boy, I began to wander whether this going to the dentist thing was such a good idea. The name of the guy that worked on my mouth is Ryan and when he walked into the room he asked me if I still wanted to have the dental work done. I said of course I do !! You are a dentist aren't you ? He looked at me and smiled…. said that he had been working in the dental clinic for the past 12 years “assisting” the other “more experienced” staff. I never did get an answer out of him so I just assumed that he was'nt a dentist but rather an experienced dental assistant. Strange thing happened… all of a sudden my tooth started to feel OK.
Anyway to cut a short story even shorter…. I got a temporary filling, hopefully this will last me until I get back to Oz later this year or until the only dentist in Lae get's back from 2x weeks leave. Somehow I don't think the filling is going to last long at all. We will wait and see and hope for the best.
By the way, tooth pain is a great object of focus in meditation. Try it some time !!
