It is 1:00pm Friday afternoon and I haven’t really got much to write. I have been busy getting ready for next semester which incidentally starts next week. The campus is a hive of activity at the moment with students sitting for “repeat” exams, other students going through the registration process and staff busy preparing for the start of classes Monday next week…

Classes here at UNITECH resumed Monday this week. I have been busy preparing for 2x subjects that I am presenting. “Project Management” to 3rd year students and “Management Information Systems” to 4th year students. As there was minimal prepared material I have had to “throw” a structure together. This has been a lot of work but has also given me free license to put together teaching material of my choosing….

Believe it or not but I get called “Sir” by many of the students. When walking around campus I get called “Sir” all the time. I keep telling my students not to call me “Sir”, I tell them that as yet I have not been knighted by the Queen !!

Have posted some Photos to the “Lae” Album. These photos were taken the day I arrived in Lae (airport) and then the day after I arrived, from the restaurant at the Lae Yacht Club. There is also a photo I took a few weeks back on a Saturday at the main markets in Lae town…

I wanted to write a few words about the dogs that live on campus. Let me start by saying that there are many dogs and few cats, very few cats. The dogs here on campus are the scrawniest, malnourished and most flea riddled dogs I have ever come across in my life. The dogs on campus are foreever barking or scratching themselves. If they aren't doing either of these “dog”…

Another visit to a local dentist !! But lucky me, to a private dentist this time. Two previous vists to the dental clinic at the local public hospital was enough. 140,000 people living in Lae and only 1x private dentist !!! Something I don't understand…. I have asked many PNG adults : When was the last time you went to the dentist ? And guess what ? I haven't met…

Monday morning, 8:00am. Just as difficult getting out of bed on a Monday morning here in PNG as what it was getting out of bed back in Sydney. I could have done with at least one more day off.
Isn't this what makes a person strong ? To push on regardless ! To get up out of bed, even if one doesn't feel like getting out of bed. To go…

Had to show you this one. The above photo was taken in the men's toilet of Business Studies (about 5 minutes ago). The tap has basically been leaking since I started here in April! The problem was reported to Maintenance some time ago but as yet they still haven't got around to fixing it.
Let's do some basic calculations on how much water is lost just from this one tap. Conservatively…

A quick post to let you all know that the leaking tap, in the Business Studies men's toilet I mentioned yesterday, has been fixed.
One of two things must have happened:
1) The maintenance people just happened to turn up to fix the tap one day after I posted my article.
2) Someone able to “pull strings” read my blog post and made a phone call to “push” things along.
Who cares whether it was…

People are always talking about corruption in PNG. In fact, talking about corruption and issues of mis-management seems to be a bit of a local pass-time. Newspapers always carry a story or two on the subject, politicians accusing other politicians, members of the public accusing politicians, etc, etc….
In PNG and in my opinion, corruption, wantokism, mis-management and nepotism are all connected. They are all related and run very deep in the…
