A PNG village (Part #1)…

Well it finally happened !!  This weekend I had an opportunity to visit my 1st PNG village. An extraodinary experience. The photos from my weekend away can be viewed in the following photo album  Wagang visit 5/8/05 + 6/8/05

I came to PNG with the hope of experiencing at some stage life in a village. This weekend I immersed myself in the village life of Wagang. A small village of around 300…

A PNG village (Part #2)…

After breakfast the men loaded up the tractor with locally grown produce. Mainly yams and bananas but also some shell fish from the local river. Most of the food was carried in these baskets which were made from leaves and stems the night before. The tractor headed off with it's “cargo” to the center of the village in preparation for an “exchange” festival with some catholics from Lae town. While…

A PNG village (Part #3)…

My visit to Wagang was well timed. As it turned out there was an exchange “festival” organised for the Saturday. From what I understood this is an event which takes place every month. A group of catholics come up from Lae and exchange gifts with the local lutherans from Wagang.

This exchange thing was explained to me earlier in the morning but I never really understood what they meant at…

I have introduced a wishlist. The wishlist is located at the top of the right hand column.…

An alternative to travelling by PMV bus…

In my last story on Wagang village I forgot to mention the drive up to Wagang on the back of a truck. I have previously written about the local PMV bus system and it’s obvious shortcomings. Now, travelling on the back of a truck is, as I discovered last Friday, a new level of experience in “extreme” travel…

I have introduced a wishlist…

I have introduced a wishlist. The items that I intend to add over time to this wishlist are not for myself but for people that I have met here in PNG. Many things are easy to come by and others not. An example of items that are scarce are books. The 1st entry on my wishlist is a book which I am trying to locate for my colleague and friend…

Nothing like letting go of a "little" tension…

This past Friday the students were involved in a good old fashioned stone fight and released some tension in the process. As I left work I noticed some commotion near the main entrance of UNITECH (commonly known as UNIGATE). As I got closer I realised that the students were involved in a stone fight with some of the local lads from Taraka.

How did it start? What I heard was…

Has Rob turned into a churchie ?

Periodically I attend the Baptist Church at Tent City. Tent City is a settlement / suburb of Lae and is situated about 8 mins drive from UNITECH away from Lae.

Last Sunday I attended the Sunday morning service and took a whole bunch of photos. Peter asked me to take some photos for one of his daughters who is in the middle of preparing a Powerpoint presentation for a church…

FAQ #2 - Has anyone sent the Bertrand Russell book yet ?

No book has been mailed out yet. About four people have offered to send over a copy. As soon as a book arrives or someone indicates that they are about to send the book, I will post a message on my blog letting you all know. In the meantime, search those 2nd hand book stores as my friend Godfrey, the book worm that he is, is starting to salivate at the…

Marking…

Marking assignments and exams is a pain in the butt. I have a whole lot of stuff I needed to start marking early last week and guess what. I have'nt started yet. You know how sometimes you need to start something and you just can't. Procrastination and digressions keep getting in the way. Marking, marking… marking. How do I digress ?   I'll do some blogging or write some emails. Have…

Between the Unexpected…

PNG is described as the Land of the Unexpected. But what about those times between the unexpected? What about those times when nothing much is happening and things are quiet? What then?

Well, what can I say? At times nothing much happens and it gets pretty boring. No car, no friends, no family, no good coffee shops, no cinemas and no “lose” women (working on this one). I have dreaded boredom as far back as…

Rain and blackouts…

You have'nt experienced rain until you have experienced the rain in Lae. (I hear that Lae gets between 6 and 7 meters of rain a year).

It has been raining solidly now for days and does not look like letting up anytime soon. I heard that some schools cancelled their classes today as there could be a problem getting the kids home at the end of the day. The ground seems to…
