Where have I been for the past week ?

You have'nt heard from me since the middle of last week due to one of power transformers on campus blowing up. “They” say it could take a week or two to fix. I have made some enquiries as to when it might be back online but have not been able to find out. The best I have been able to find out is : “It will be fixed within the next…

This blog has a slideshow feature to view photos within any of the photo albums.

When viewing an individual photo (by clicking on it from within a photo album), you are presented with an option at the bottom of the photo : “(View as slideshow)”. If you click on “slideshow” all the photos in the album will be displayed as a slideshow (5 secs between photos).

A quick update…

Things have been hectic the past couple of weeks. I have been busy with marking and also preparing lectures and classes for the 2nd half of this current semester. Also, we are still having problems with one of the transformers on campus and this situation has highly impacted the availability of the university Computing facilities. Essentially : no network : no blogg !!

Power is unreliable at the best of times…

Madang Settlement adjacent to UNITECH

I had the opportunity Saturday before last to venture into the settlement that lies adjacent to the UNITECH campus. Settlements are very common in PNG especially in the larger towns. Lae has a population of around 140,000 and there would have to be close to 120,000 people living in these settlements areas. If you look at a map of Lae you will notice many of these settlements or compounds. The Madang settlement adjacent to UNITECH is an example of one such settlement…

Only if you find "farting" amusing…

If you find farting amusing then please read on, otherwise stop right here and go back !!

I come from a long line of master farters and within my family a good fart always gets a good laugh. See, in some families farting is taboo whilst in others it can be a great source of humour. My family fall into the latter category and if you ever hear a Schilt laughing…

Problem with the blog layout…

I am experiencing a formatting problem with the blog. You might have noticed certain posts having unusual text formatting. I just found out from my service provider that there could be problems when preparing posts in MS Word before publishing.

Now that I am aware of this limitation I will try and sort out any previous blog posts that might “look” a little funny.

Cheers.

A few Saturday's ago….

About three Saturday's ago I drove with Peter out to the Baptist Church at Tent Siti, we were heading out there to pickup his daughters and some of their friends, it was around 8pm and it was already dark.
On our way back from the church we got held up by a group of around 5 youths, pissed as “newts” they were. Peter was forced to stop the vehicle as one…

In remembrance of Diana Kerowa…

This weekend just gone one of the female students from Business Studies was stabbed to death at the Kamkumung bus stop (just up the road from UNITECH). Diana was in my 4th year IS422 (Management Information Systems) class and was only weeks from competing her studies and graduating. A sad loss indeed. I sense that some of her class mates have gone into “shock” and are finding her death difficult…

Haus Krai…

Last night I had the opportunity to attend my 1st Haus Krai. In PNG when someone dies the family and relatives of the deceased organise a gathering to mourn and remember the passing away of their loved one and friend. The Haus Krai or gathering can go on for days and finishes when the body is taken home for a formal funeral service. Last night's Haus Krai was held in memory of…

One of the many Buai stores on campus…

Buai or betelnut is extremely popular in PNG and the number of stores where you can buy the stuff reflects this demand. UNITECH is no exception to this and therefore you will find plenty of buai being sold on campus. I would estimate at least 24 of these little stores spread all over the university grounds. These markets or stores are basically a table that has been setup out the front of someone's…
