About three Saturday's ago I drove with Peter out to the Baptist Church at Tent Siti, we were heading out there to pickup his daughters and some of their friends, it was around 8pm and it was already dark.
On our way back from the church we got held up by a group of around 5 youths, pissed as “newts” they were. Peter was forced to stop the vehicle as one of the youths stood in front of our car wielding a bottle of beer, he raised it above his head as if he was going to throw it through the windscreen. I was in the front of the car with Peter and the girls were on the back of the utility.
For about 10secs I thought : “A hold up”!!! The area we were driving is rather notorious for raskol road blocks and the odd carjacking. For those long 10 secs I was shit scared (toilet paper never far away).
As the remainder of the youths walked past the vehicle they laughed and carried on, one of them had quick words with Peter and we were on our way.
As we drove of Peter and myself never spoke about the incident and I wandered whether he was ever as scared as I was.
The unpredictability of PNG !!
