
On PNG Independence Day, almost two weeks ago now, I was invited to a Mumu by Rondi, Thomas and their family. Rondi comes around my house a couple of times a week to help out with the housework. Rondi asked me almost two months ago what I was doing on Independence Day and as I had nothing plannned at the time, accepted an invitation to a Mumu at their house which is located inside campus.
A Mumu is a traditional PNG BBQ. The method used for cooking varies slightly depending on what part of the country you are in but essentially the food is cooked in an earth oven. The photo above shows Rondi and her daughter Maree removing the hot stones from the cooking pit at around 4pm in the afternoon. I was told that a fire had been started at 4am that morning to heat up the rocks. At about 8am the food, which was wrapped in banana leaves was “buried” under the the hot rocks and sat there cooking all day until around 4pm in the afternoon.
Absolutely delicious !!!! Sweat potatoes, tapiok, different types of bananas, cabbage, chicken, corn, all soaking and cooking in lots of coconut cream.
