TWO fights in two weeks without police intervention at the West Taraka suburb have irked community leaders who have questioned the role of police in the city.
The fight was between the Gumine and Kerowagi people from Simbu province residing at West Taraka.
Lae Urban local level government ward six leader David Toa said the fight lasted for four hours.
Police were contacted but never turned up, Mr Toa claimed.
Two houses were destroyed as the roofing irons were pulled down and used as shields.
Mr Toa said the second fight occurred towards the end of a mini-cultural show last Sunday at 4pm, when a group of drunkards destroyed the music stand.
Women from the ward had staged the show.
When security guards tried to intervene, a big fight started with people hurling rocks and stones at each other well into the night. Many people were injured, with two people receiving knife wounds.
Mr Toa said people in the suburb were now living in fear.
