Last night three of us went out for dinner. There was Peter (my PNG friend) and Geoffrey (a new arrival in Lae from AVI). Peter picked both of us up from my place and we headed into town at around 7:15pm.
We ended up eating chinese at one of the local restaurants called Kwantung. The food is reasonable and as far as the decor is concerned it could easily be a chinese restaurant anywhere in the world. The usual, large round tables, the mandatory bar with bottles of spirits older than the hills, a little altar here, some chinese caligraphy prints over there. You get the picture.
Dinner and company were most enjoyable and all three of us had a great night.
But…
As you all now know : PNG is the Land of the Unexpected !!
On the way home Peter's car broke down. It was so dark. We were at a place known as “Speedway” which is noted for hold-ups by the local raskols. As dark and as late as it was, within 2 minutes locals had emerged out of the bushes (this phenomenon always blows me away) to see what was going on and whilst Peter was on the phone calling home to organise a pickup a friend of his drove past and pulled up to see what was happening.
After a short discussion our car was towed back to Peter's factory, there we were met by one of Peter's friends and some of his “lads”. Despite the “bad luck” all worked out in the end.
Was I scared?…. A little.
Was the toilet paper near by?…. Of course.
The moral of this story : In PNG help is never far away !!!
