PNG Kids…

PNG Kids... photo

Before coming to PNG earlier this year I had never owned a camera (digital nor analogue) and never really appreciated the art and timing involved in capturing that “special” moment.

Now that I own a digital camera I have developed the habit of carrying it everywhere I go (don't tell any raskals). Always on the lookout for that “special” moment. There is one problem : it takes a few moments to pull the camera out of the bag and guess what? The moment has already passed. I am beginning to appreciate how photographers are somehow able to bypass this delay and capture the moment anyway.

My all time favourite photos are of the PNG kids. Like they say a picture is equivalent to a thousand words. The photo above of “Betty” is one such example.

When I look at the photo of “Betty” I see many things. I see strength and struggle,  I see pride and I see history, I see wisdom and innonence. I see a young girl. I also see determination, normally associated with women much older.

The photo album PNG Kids is gathering a nice collection of such photos. Have a squizz !!

Anyway…

Today I got the shits. Why?  I headed into town this morning to pay for and pickup the airline ticket for my trip back to Sydney over the xmas break. The travel agent is located at the Lae International Hotel, which is about a 10 minute walk from the center of Lae or the main bus stop. I caught the PMV into town this morning and left my office at about 9:30am.

The damn eftpos machine at the hotel was  out of order and the  travel consultant asked me to come back another time. Let me tell you…  I wasn't very happy and walked out of the Lae Int. hoping that someone would give me some cheek on the way back to the main bus stop. No luck !!  Everyone was friendly and courteous. Doesn't that give you the poos….  when wanting to be confronted by a nasty/rude person, there is never one around !!!

Interesting thing….

When looking at the photo of Betty above…  my irritation is slowly leaving.

Thanks Betty.
