One of the many things I like about living in PNG is that in this place
one exists very much on the “edge”. The “edge” of what? The “edge” of
safety, the “edge” of health and the “edge” of life and suffering.
The “edge” implies danger and there is lots of danger around these neck
of the woods. Ask the people that know me and they would agree -
Rob has a tendency to peek over the edge – the abyss. I'm not talking
about bungee jumping or skydiving or fast cars.
What am I talking about…?
Let me talk briefly about women. Yes…. women !! Creatures
that a man is unlikely to fully understand within one lifetime. A
temptress and spellmaker. A source of pleasure perhaps? Companions?
Mothers, sisters and friends. Man's other half. Takers of freedom
and independence (a single man's perspective). All of the above or none?
At this point in time I am very glad to have disabled blog comments!!!
Back to women….
I'm going to be honest here…. long before leaving the
shores of downunder I had this view that all PNG women were ugly. When
I first arrived earlier this year, as far as I could see, my view on
PNG women was confirmed. Now that I have been here for 7 months now,
let me make it very clear, my perception of PNG female beauty has
totally changed.
I have a confession to make… PNG women are beautiful !! My
perception of what is beautiful and what is ugly has obviously been
going through a transformation of late. My oath it has.
So what does a single man do surrounded by all this beauty? Apart
from having to “manage” a certain level of sexual frustration… he
looks and he looks and then he starts to want…
The dating game in PNG is totally foreign to me. Back at home I could
afford to make a mistake or two. A broken heart here and there
(sometimes my own). A period of feeling “yukee” and messed up. And time
passes and all comes good. Back to playing the field again.
And what of the rules of the game around here?
The “edge” and the “abyss” merge. Danger. PNG. The rule book gets
thrown out the window and one plays with great caution. Bride Price?
What the fuck is a bride price? Thought that went out the window back
in the old old days. PNG man… this is PNG !!
Help me !!!! Help me !!!! I need a woman !!! (See what I mean by frustration).
The beautiful ones smile at me… I smile back. And
then… I start thinking bride price…. and I get scared.
A threat perhaps? Danger. The rules of the game…. what are the
rules of the game??? Can I afford to make mistakes for the
benefit of learning?
And then there was this 19 year old…
…the “edge” is never far away.
