Late last week I was approached by Henri – one of the technicians that works for the University's IT Department. Henri asked me if I could take come photos one of the Rugby teams in town last week for a tournament.
Henri is from a place called Ialibu in the Southern Highlands – the football team was also from the same place. They had travelled all the way from Ialibu to play in the Lae tournament.
Interesting meeting these young men as most are from surrounding villages near Ialibu. Something about the young PNG lads that I find quite fearsome and warrior like.
Rugby league in PNG is serious business and there have been many instances of fights breaking out after matches.
Anyway, I took about a dozen photos on the day and these can be viewed in the Ialibu Tigers (1/12/05) photo album. One of the photos was forwarded on to the local newspaper for publication but I do not believe that it made it to press – due to a late submission.
The “Tigers” played three matches in Lae last weekend and my understanding is that they won 2 out of 3 – which was'nt good enough.
