It's been over a week now since I landed at Sydney airport, back for the xmas break. An eye-opener indeed. Reverse culture shock is a fact (for me anyway).
There are things that I already miss from PNG, at the same time I'm having a grand old time staying at Mum's, sunny and beachside Umina Beach, catching up with family and friends, lots of dinners and coffees… and the stories of course, lots and lots of stories; both shared and heard.
So…
What are some of the things that have hit me since coming back to Sydney:
- The aggresive and needy face of consumerism.
- Fat arses.
- The old people complaining when the train is running 5x minutes late.
- The race riots.
- Sydney's great cafe's
- The degree of control
- Signs everywhere !
- The contrast
- The emptyness of people
- Stress
And
What about some of things I miss from PNG + Lae?
- My work colleagues
- Melanesian nights and sounds
- Betelnut
- Some of the smells
- Local markets
- Friends
- Foodmart
- The solitude
- Cheap cigarettes
- Fresh coconut juice
There are many more lists that I could make up but I will stop right here and now. My mate Kevvy from Shepp is about to give me a phone call.
