Saturday... photo

Today I headed into Lae town with Eli - my “dearest” of PNG friends. The above photo was taken at the Melanesian Hotel over a pot of freshly brewed coffee. It’s a new experience for me to walk around town with a female friend, the interaction with the locals is definitely different. Relationships in PNG are a serious business and not to be taken lightly. Not sure where I’m headed with this but I do anticipate having to visit “unchartered territory”.

After town we caught the PMV and headed into the Kamkumung markets, the 2nd biggest markets in Lae. These markets are situated between campus and Lae town and next to one of the larger settlements. Lots of buai, food and clothing. As is the norm in PNG, the locals are very friendly and our walk thru these markets was a real buzz.

Perhaps it’s the attention I get, perhaps it’s the response I get when I share a ciggie or some betelnut. Perhaps it’s my interactive nature that feels fulfilled here in PNG. Perhaps it’s this need I have to go places where other white folks generally stay away from (out of fear). Perhaps a combo of all of the above. Whatever the reason - the PNG people are special, lovable and giving.

After we got back to UNITECH Eli and me parted. Eli headed back home to West Taraka, where she lives, and I headed home for wash and a rest. I had made arrangements with Eli to meet her at Unigate the following day (Sunday) and walk with her into West Taraka where she lives.

West Taraka is commonly known as the “Wild West” and is one of those places in Lae where outsiders are safest not to enter. Even the locals that do nort reside there stay away from the place. Fear is but a construct and in most cases un-real.

One of the paradoxes that keeps one safe in PNG - is interaction. But to interact one must take that leap of faith. Tis a risk…. you bet. Nevertheless a risk definetely worth taking. Keeps this man safe. The other whites can stay in their homes, drive their cars and go to their clubs. Do they know what they are missing out on? I don’t think so. Fear.
