Simon's body has finally been laid to rest in his home town of Tari in the Southern Highlands. The following email was circulated the other day on this matter:
I received word this morning from his brother that Simon was laid to rest on Thursday, 13th of April in his home place of Tari.
The total cost to get him burried was about K4,000. Members of the UNITECH staff donated K475 towards his burial.
Simon's family thank you for your help.
Personally, I am very happy that his body finally made it back to his village. At one stage there was a danger that he might have received a paupers burial here in Lae itself. What did sadden me is that there was never a Haus Krai for Simon. But better he made it back to his village without a Haus Krai than if he had received a Haus Krai but never made it back to his village.
So for Simon – things have worked out well. May his spirit rest in peace.
On a slightly different note… with people's in PNG migrating away from their village grounds into the cities such as Moresby or Lae the situation of bodies not making it back to the village of origin will become more and more common. A story in one of the local papers the other said that there are currently over 130 bodies in the Moresby morgue waiting for collection. In reality most of these bodies will never make it back to the village for burial. One of the unfortunate consequences of PNG embracing this so called new way of living.
Nothing ever stays the same…. old dies to make way for the new and so the cycle has gone since the beginning of time (maybe even beforehand).
