(DBS Rugby Team 2006)
After a hard week it was nice to unwind yesterday and watch the DBS (Department of Business Studies) Rugby team wip Civil Engineering's arse. Last year's 2005 UNITECH cup was won by Civil Engineering against DBS in the finals.
Yesterday was also the first time (since I have been here anyway) that the DBS team have had their own jerseys – the above photo was taken minutes before the boys ran on to the field and kicked Civil's arse. All I know is that they won – not sure sure what the score was in the end.
Some of the boys above are students of mine, some are ex students, and the rest I have not yet had the privilege to teach. A few weeks ago the DBS Rugby team organised a fundraiser to raise some cash for the jerseys and a few other tidbits – the boys had this dream of going on to the field yesterday against last years winners in new jerseys. Their dream became a reality yesterday – not only did they play in their new jerseys but they also beat last year's champions.
(A couple of us chipped in some extra cash to cover the costs of the “tidbits”)
To be honest I'm not much of a rugby fan (unless it's State of Origin of course) but turning up some Saturday's and watching DBS play is something I do enjoy and find relaxing. The guys love it that one of their staff would turn up and watch. Interesting thing about campus life and academics – here at UNITECH anyway. They all seem to stay away from student sporting events – even last year when DBS played in the finals – there were only a couple of staff that turned up. I suppose it's this us and them thing or a need academics have to preserve some sort of social seperation. Personally I don't give a rats arse about this us or them mentality – as far as I'm concerned – I'm here as a volunteer and interaction with the locals – students or otherwise – is high up on my agenda.
By the way – DBS is now #1 on the UNITECH Rugby competition ladder. Also, if you wish to view photos taken at yesterday 's game please go to the DBS Rugby Team 2006 photo album. There are only a few photos but I the team photo turned out tops !
