Cases of rape in PNG are reported in the newspapers on a daily basis. Rape of young and old by men from all walks of life, politicians, police, military, offcie workers, your average Jo in the street. Relatives raping relatives. On the odd occasion women raping boys. All types of rape. A violent crime if there ever was one, a aspect of life in PNG that certainly makes this country an unattractive place for visitors. I am sorry to say this but its true.
Here are some of my thoughts on the subject:
- Rape is one human-being violating another.
- If one of my female loved ones was physically violated – I would be very eager to dish out my own punishment.
- My guess is that alcohol is somehow involved in most PNG rape cases.
- Alcohol, marijuana and gambling are the primary cause of the social breakdown in PNG.
- Alcohol, marijuana and gambling are serious issues affecting all settlements and in many cases villages as well.
- All three substances/activities are readily available.
- A “pissed” couple about to engage in sexual intercourse are less likely to use protection.
- HIV/AIDS is a serious epidemic.
- I have observed that the PNG national is both submissive and agressive by nature. A contrast within the character of the PNG'er which I haven't quite got my head around.
- There is not one AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) meeting in PNG (not that I am aware of anyway).
- More social decay in PNG is imminent.
- The move towards christian fundamentalism is perhaps contributing towards the above problems… an over emphasis on right and wrong – which inevitably leads to guilt and remorse – which then leads to more self destruction.
- Man takes a drink – drink takes a drink – and then drink takes the man.
- It's not just the blokes!!
I could go on… and on…
But I think I will stop right here and right now.
Go the blogging !!
