Volunteers show interest for those in Lae settlement areas
AN Australian volunteer has taken a particular
interest in disadvantaged people, especially those in settlements. Having
arrived in Papua New Guinea only five months ago, Anthony Powell, a member of
the Australia Volunteers International teaching business and commerce at the
University of Technology, was introduced to West Taraka by a Unitech colleague,
Robert Schilt. Since then he has shown keen interest with those disadvantaged in
the settlements. Mr Schilt introduced Mr Powell to a West Taraka couple Irene
and Joe, who have been struggling to improve the situation for Duna elementary
primary school inside West Taraka. Mr Powell promised to help the couple in
whatever way he could. That commitment was honoured last weekend Mr Powell and
Mr Schilt drove into Duna elementary school with a car-load of books. The books
were arranged by the Rotary Club of Lae and sourced from rotary clubs in
Australia. And they planned to source more books for the school, hopefully from
New Zealand, by the end of the year. The school needs desks, books, classrooms
and many other necessities to educate children well. Mr Schilt says he feels
more Papua New Guinean after being in the country for nearly two years. He has
also undertaken other charity work, including assisting local kickboxing clubs
with training facilities.
