A couple of things that irk me…

Firstly, queues in PNG have absolutely no meaning whatsoever. One walks
into a store or shop to buy something and the person with the longest
arm always gets served first. Most people have absolutely no regard
whatsoever for the fact that someone is there already waiting. On top of
that the person serving behind the counter will inevitably serve the
person with the “longest arm” first. The trick here in PNG if you wish
to get served is you need to be holding your money and lean over the
counter and literally shove the money in the face of the store attendant.
Yesterday, I blew my top in the bakery across the road from campus. It
was lunch time and I generally go across the road and buy a pie and a
can of lemonade, when I walked into the store there was one person being
served. I stood behind this person and waited my turn (as one does). The
next thing three blokes (nationals) walk in and go straight up to the
counter and do the shoving the money with the long arm business. Well,
my heart started to beat faster and I began to see red. I spoke up and I
was fuming. The 1st queue jumper managed to get served but the other two
gentlemen stood back and allowed me to be served next. One of the
blokes actually agreed with me on the count of queue jumping and how
disrespectful it can be.
The second thing that irks me is how some nationals I have
met in the past 18 months only seem to be capable of honesty and
speaking their minds when pissed. On second thoughts, it saddens me more
than it irks me. Some of the blokes I am referring to here are men I
have come to call friends. Friendship to me, is based on honesty and
trust and if these qualities grow over time the friendship too will
grow. Without either of these qualities there can be no friendship.
Time reveals many things.
