We have been in Lae since late last week. Eli travelled down by PMV last Thursday and I flew down with Air Link aroyund lunchtime Friday. Great to see the old haunts and catch-up with some of the locals. Been staying at Geoff's (fellow vollie) and have enjoyed the few days “out:.
People keep asking uis when we are heading back and we keep replying – tomorrow, day after or perhaps even the day after that. When I left the Hospital I memo'd my boss that I was heading down to Lae and not coming back until the home situation was all sorted. So here we are in Lae waiting for a phone call from the Hospital to tell us that a truck is on it's way to Lae to pick all my stuff still sitting in boxes at Geoff's. No hurry! I'm rather enjoying the short break!
The one thing about Lae that I am definitely not enjoying is the heat and humidity. Weather wise Goroka shits all over the coastal areas. Have purchased a printer to take back to Goroka with me (HP K550).
I must have reatined some of my popularity in Lae town since leaving UNITECH late December last year. The feeling of safety is still there and the street boys approach me as if I had never left. The interactivity of life in PNGcontinues to be an incredible source of inner happiness for me.
Great seeing everyone at UNITECH, including ex colleages from business studies, expats, non academic staff and even many students etc… It was like I never left the place. The whole management thing continues to suck with now many nationals aiming to leave after the recent flop with the NASA strike. All I can say is two things: 1) Those whom laugh last laugh best and 2) Perhaps in round 2 you would have learnt heaps from round 1. Sure glad I'm out of there!.
Writing this post from an Internet cafe in Lae. Seems nice and quick but… K24/hour!!
So, enough for now…
