It’s beautiful drive up the mountain and the so called “toll” stops do not particularly bother me – I normally throw in a few kina for the “lads” to the annoyance of fellow travellers.

You aren't in any real danger until you disobey the 'maus man'. This hasn't happened to me at Daulo as I am married to a woman there, but it has happened to me at other points along the Highlands highway. Regardless, the people are wonderful and landscape breathtaking, and I would not trade it for anything. Enjoy and live.
