I dread going to the bank,
I really – really dread going to the bank.
There’s always a queue,
Always a very – very long queue.
The queues in PNG banks are long and slow,
A gut wrenching affair,
Enough to drive a man insane,
This man!
I’ve had a cheque for the past week,
Been walking past the bank almost everyday,
Peering through the windows,
Scared off by the queues.
Tomorrow,
Tomorrow,
Tomorrow…
Today was the day,
I built up the courage,
And the frame of mind,
Didn’t last for long at all.
I’m an impatient bugger,
And here I am in PNG,
The land of waiting and waiting,
Especially at banks!
So there I found myself,
At the end of the queue,
In the Goroka Branch of the ANZ Bank,
Already frustrated and restless.
Two hours,
No kidding,
Two hours,
Of waiting.
I wanted to spit and kill,
I wanted to yell and rave,
I wanted to bash and maim,
But I hung in there!!
I wanted to push and shove,
I wanted to injure and intimidate,
For fuck sake!!
I just want to be served!!!
I hung in there and I waited,
Just like the others,
Fidgeting – sighing,
And swearing to myself.
And when my turn came up,
I could not believe my luck,
The sense of relief,
Almost like winning the lottery.
