Eli…

Our next door neighbour Eli markets tirelessly. Most days and evenings there she is, out the front of her house - seeling betelnut, smokes and occasionally home made donuts and ice-blocks. When I head to work she is working her market and again when I head home - there she is sitting at her little market trying to make an extra few bucks. It’s the way of many PNG women - to try and make ends meet.
Eli often gives me a freeby as I walk past - a ciggie or a buai and sometimes even both. I reciprocate from tme to time and it sort of evens out in the long term. Eli (that’s my Eli) happens to be one of her best customers but to be fair on Eli - they have become best of mates.
Eli is married to Scott and they have 4 or 5 kids (4 of heir own I think and one adopted). They are pretty good neighbours (most of the time) although they can be noisy on the odd occasion (and so can we).
Our dog “gelo” has almost become a “bark at nothing dog” and my guess is that she annoys the crap our of many folks - including Ei and her family. One of Gelo’s pastimes is standing next to their fence and barking like crazy at any one next door.
Eli (that’s my Eli again) calls Eli (that’s the neighbour variety) - “De-e” - which in Simbu “Tok Ples” means “Wan nem” or what we would know as namesake. So… most of the time Eli and Eli refer to each other as “De-e”. Make sense?
All in all - Eli and her family are great neighbors !!
