The email signature type!
I have been playing around a little with a program called “Fortune”.
It's a fairly standard Linux facility that displays random sayings and
proverbs or whatever else you might like to add.
And because Linux is Linux and one is able to tailor things to the
“enth” degree - one is able to take advantage of the “fortune” facility
and have emails appended with a nice little proverb.
The email client I currently use is Evolution and it comes with an email signature scripting facility. All I basically had to do was write a short “bash” script to concatenate my personal signature with a fortune proverb. It works so that each time I now sign my email a new proverb is added to the bottom of my personal details!
Example of a fortune adage:
I count him braver who overcomes his desires
than him who conquers his enemies;
for the hardest victory is over self.
— Aristotle
There is definitely no end to the fiddling!
On another note…
After work we ended up at a gathering down the road - a large group of folks had come from Kaubasis to Goroka town for a thank you feast.
Gideon - a man from Kaubasis - recently married a girl whose clan is
from Goroka town. Gideon and clan paid a generous bride price some time ago and now it was the wife's clan's turn to say thank you to Gideon's family! Make sense? (Please don't ask me to explain again!).
As it turned out the thank you feat was no match for what was originally paid for in bride price and other items of goodwill. The locals from Kaubasis felt insulted and as we left as a group - I could sense a sadness and disappointment. Many folk whom had contributed handsomely to the bride price ceremony had not been reimbursed (so to speak) sufficiently.
What follows on from this afternoon's episode is now anyone's guess but I'm sure there'll be a few strong words shared around some fire
somewhere tonight.
