Goroka General Hospital now has Internet!!

Posted May 16, 2008 in Working for the man | 4 Responses

It’s Friday afternoon going on 5:00pm and I’m writing this post from my desk at work.

What’s different about this post is that it will get published from my desk in about 5 minutes!! After 18 months we finally have the internet connected at the Hospital!!!

Yeehaaaah….!!!

A huge leap for the staff of Goroka General Hospital!

In fact an unbelievable step towards embracing technology. The process of getting this service commissioned, specifically the interaction with Telikom PNG, has been a long, drawn out and incredibly frustrating process. A simple phone line!! Not so in PNG folks!

So what do we have?

You ready…. a whopping 64kbps leased connection!!

By western standards a piddly 64k – but let me tell you it’s a heap better than nothing – or dialup for that matter.

And what I am I using to write this blog post I hear you ask? I’m using a Firefox Add-on called ScribeFire.

Back to the work thing…

So what’s planned for the Hospital?

In the short term…

  1. Internet access for three PC’s in the IT Training Room.
  2. The setting up and training of staff in the HINARI online service.
  3. And yes… a Hospital web site!

In the long term….

Well who knows? Long term… is a long way away yet!

And so it is folks…

…at 5:10pm on a Friday afternoon.

I’m out of here…

Time for a well deserved brew!!

    Hi Robs,

Its a history in whole of PNG medical fraternity for Goroka Hospital to have an internet service and website.

Great work and fantastic move. Keep the hospital rolling in the positive direction and hopefully many other hospitals in the country will learn from Goroka experience and pursue in the same direction.

    Keep up the good work

    Hi Yafa,

    Thanks for the positive feedback!
All we need to do now is get Datec to upgrade their GKA_POM link to a decent speed and we’ll be able to actually use it!
