Simple one might think? Not so in Papua New Guinea!
As of this morning direct phone lines in and out of the Hospital have been cut by Telikom PNG, apparently as a consequence of non payment by the Hospital of outstanding phone bills.
Note that local calls within the Goroka area can still be made and received by Hospital staff. But faxes and calls made to numbers outside of Goroka are not possible.
This reminds me of a story I read a couple of years back about a Fire Station in the Southern Highlands that had its water cut off by the local Water Board also as a result of lack of payment of outstanding arrears.
Local institutions seem to make it a sport to see how long they can get away with not paying their bills - especially government. Some might put it down to lack of funds - this might very well be the case in isolated cases - in my view it all happens as a result of pure and utter neglect and in some instances unquestionable incompetence.
I’m also of the opinion that any business, whether government or private, need to make it a priority to pay their debtors in a timely manner. It’s the way business survives and besides debts do need to be settled, it’s common sense and basic courtesy that one’s debts are settled as they fall due.
Interestingly, the billing for Internet services that we have recently commissioned will appear on the same Telikom PNG bill. It concerns me no end to think that our Internet services will get cut off due to the Hospital’s bill not being paid on time.
So the situation at the Hospital with direct lines being cut off as result of non-payment, in my view is totally unacceptable. Hospital management please take note!
I hope that the overdue bills get paid promptly and that Hospital phone services are restored as soon as possible.
Why not pay bills on time?
