Old photos of Lae

I was recently posting some more photos to my online album when I come across a whole bunch of Lae, including some old Lae snaps from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s…

4th Street in Lae

(4th Street and section of Lae Shopping Center)

Lae Botanical Gardens

(What the Botanical Gardens used to look like!!!)

Childrens Pool in the Botanical Gardens

(And to think that the Botanical Gardens once had a pool!!)

Lae sure has changed!! When folks say that life was much better pre independence and seeing these photos of yesteryear I would tend to agree.

Main Bus Stop in Lae

(Taken at the main bus stop in Lae town – note the garbage and the condition of the roads compared to the old days!!)

Good to see the old Lae photos. Revived some memories. My husband was curator, Lae Botanic Gardens 1970 – 1974. I understand the Botanic Gardens are different now.

Hi Robert, we recently lived in Lae while packing up mining equipment that was sent to South Africa.Having a bit of time to kill we visited quite a few spots of interest After finding the gardens it became my favourite spot we made use of the barbeque facilities etc.It must have been a wonderful place as your pictures show kind of like Rhodesia in the good old days. Appreciate more pics if possible. Regards Greg Goodes Pietersburg South Africa.
