The following article was published in today’s issue of The National and written by PNG journalist Malum Nalu. The article is based on a white paper I wrote some months ago titled: “An Open Source Software (OSS) Initiative in a PNG Hospital”. After almost 15 months of hard and persistent work we have finally received our certificate of registration from the Investment Promotion Authority (IPA). After a visit to Goroka Post Office a couple of weeks ago I was overjoyed to find an official looking envelope in my PO Box. It’s been tough going and the monthly meetings in the village with the representatives from the eight clans is finally starting to show results…

Remember Mr and Mrs Oink or Prof and Princess - the two pig beings that put me on the Papua New Guinea “Big man” map?
Originally a gift from Uncle Joel, we looked after the two piglets during our time at UNITECH in 2006. Kau-kau twice a day, the before sunrise “oink-oinks” - please feed me wake up calls, how could one ever forget?. We both grew fond of our two little babies and looked after them like one would there own kids…

Thanks to the generosity and effort from my dearest Mum another box full of goodies has arrived in Goroka, Papua New Guinea. Some of you will relate to the anticipation I feel between the time that I know a parcel is on its way and that moment when the PO Box is opened and there’s a little card that says to collect from the Post Office counter…

It was six months ago that I started the exciting but tedious process of migrating my blog from one Service Provider to another and from one Blogging platform to another. Let me tell you right now that as much as the exercise has been worth it the task has been drawn out, tedious and in some way a pain in the proverbial…

Another parcel arrived in the post last week! After receiving a box from Mum about three weeks ago I feel like October must surely be our lucky month. The family back home have demonstrated their caring and generosity once again. Like always the folks here in Goroka fortunate enough to be given an item from the lucky dip are eternally grateful as I’m sure you will all appreciate from the photos below and also other photos in these albums…

A long time friend recently sent me an email in which he used the word “Kaizen”. You might be thinking what the heck is “Kaizen” (as I did when I first saw the word) and how does it relate to Wordpress or blogging?

Today we head to Kaubasis village and our “Hut” in preparation for a gathering on Thursday of the eight Keto and Tapasi Clans to celebrate and mark the launching of our newly registered association. Every so often a new species of flora is discovered in Papua New Guinea and this one is a cracker… there’s definitely a reason why they call this the Land of the Unexpected!!

I’m going to share a short story with you that clearly demonstrates the obvious corruption and at times twisted behaviour that is endemic within Papua New Guinea. When folks talk about corruption they inevitably point their fingers at the halls of power in Port Moresby or the assemblies at Provincial level, they blame Politicians and bureaucrats, some point there finger at the Police or maybe even big business and of course the last few years the asians have copped it…

For three days and nights the eight Keto-Tapasi Clans rejoiced. Young and old, they danced and they sang, they celebrated the traditions of their ancestors. Men that had never worn bilas before did so for the first time. The old sat down with the young to teach them the intricacies of body decoration. Over the three day period singsing groups from all over Kaubasis expressed custom with spontaneity and pride. Many an old folk told me how they had not witnessed such a display of unity and community spirit since they were young kids…

The perception that outsiders have of Papua New Guinea basically remains unchanged over the years. According to the Australian Government, a friend and close neighbour, PNG remains a violent, dangerous and extremely risky country to travel. Is this only perception or is there some truth to this?
