Want to setup a website really fast?

SiteProNews: Your Website from the Ground Up in 10 Steps

So, you have finally decided to build yourself a website, but really have no idea where to start. The following 10 steps will give you some insight into what you need to address when creating a search friendly website from the ground up.
While this article is not an exhaustive list of everything you need to know, it does touch base on many of the important aspects of creating a new website.

Four years in PNG and I have not yet spotted one bookshop!

Malum Nalu: 75 Books Every Man Should Read

Esquire magazine, which this year celebrates its 75th anniversary, has long been a favorite of mine mainly because of its strong literary tradition and its emphasis on what Americans call ‘New Journalism’ – a style of writing in which journalism is written like a novel.
This American icon continues this tradition in its latest issue, commemorating its 75 years, with an article titled ‘The 75 Books Every Man Should Read’, which, according to Esquire itself, “is an unranked, incomplete, utterly biased list of the greatest works of literature ever published”.

Something all locals definitely need:

Newsforge: Track your missing laptop with Adeona

Almost every laptop on sale today comes equipped with the Kensington security slot on the side or back, through which you can connect a theft-deterring locked steel cable. The system’s down sides are (a) that a would-be thief can damage or destroy your equipment trying to yank the cable out, and (b) that you have to buy the cable separately. As an alternative, the free software utility Adeona won’t preemptively deter theft, but it will help you track down your stolen equipment and better the chances of its recovery by police.

Scary or true or both?

Tubuans and Dukduks: Renaissance of the Dark Arts: Witchcraft in Papua New Guinea

A lack of faith in Western medicine is fuelling a resurgence in witchcraft in PNG.
When Raphael Kogun’s uncle fell ill two years ago, his brothers knew exactly what to do. They called in a witchdoctor to find out who was responsible for their relative becoming “bagarup” – pidgin for sick, from the English “buggered up”. The finger of blame was pointed at a middle-aged couple from Kogun’s village in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, who were accused of being possessed by evil spirits and placing a curse on the man.

Yes!

NewsForge: Manou Chen of Open.Amsterdam (video interview)

Open.Amsterdam (in Dutch; English PDF download available here) is working to convert most of the city of Amsterdam’s computers to GNU/Linux and open source software, and to make sure that any remaining proprietary-OS computers owned by the city use open file formats instead of closed, proprietary ones. In this interview, project director Manuo Chen tells us how the project is going and a little about its goals — and a little about some of the pitfalls it has encountered, too.

If only!

MadDog: One Laptop Per Child in PNG

I recently went over to Divine Word University to visit my friend Chandana Silva, “The Guru of Gurus” when it comes to computer stuff in these parts. As usual, I went to beg for help. As usual, Chandana was most helpful.
And, as usual, he had something interesting to show me.
Probably everybody on the planet has already seen the “One Laptop Per Child” computer – except me. I had, of course, heard about it. I don’t think you could be conscious on Planet Earth without hearing about it. But, this was the first time that I’d seen one…

Everyone’s hopping on the bandwagon!

Brian Gardner’s Revolution Theme is one of the more successful premium WordPress themes out there. While I have no idea how many licenses have been sold, the praise and amount of websites running it is testament enough.

Honesty, madness and vulnerability…

MadDog: Our House

As I sit at my desk at home today with the morning sun’s blonde radiance streaming in through my bedroom window listening to Our House from the 1970 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young album Déjà Vu, I’m overcome by weepy sentimentality.
Did you ever feel so completely contented with life that it was a little scary?
The world is wobbling drunkenly at the very edge of the abyss, and I’m sitting here salting my oatmeal breakfast with tears of ecstasy because I’m feeling so fine.

The truth behind the truth behind the truth…

Tavurvur: Understanding the PNG LNG Project

Since April 2007, the PNG LNG Project has been working to develop the design basis and feasibility for a world class LNG project that will make Papua New Guinea the world’s newest LNG supplier.
The Project Joint Venturers signed the Joint Operating Agreement in Port Moresby on the 13th of March. The JOA provides an agreed framework for determining governance and ownership interests and for coordinating the development and operation of the Project, which has been set up as an integrated venture incorporating all components including upstream, gas transportation pipeline, liquefaction, marketing, and shipping…
