I’ve been busy making changes to the blog yet again. Changing the layout or adding new features seems to have become an ongoing affair. Whether it’s “Kaizen” or another driving force that I am yet to find out about – this business of WordPress and never ending change – for this blogger – is very real.
In a previous post I made a comparison between WordPress and an older model british motorcycle…
I reckon is a bit like owning a British motorcycle (well, one of the older models anyway)! Going under the hood to tinker is driven firstly by the inherent need for maintenance but also driven by the passion that goes along with “riding” either one of these machines…
The fact remains that a day doesn’t seem to go by without some changes to this blog. Some of these improvements are behind the scenes and under the hood stuff but most are aesthetic. At times I feel constrained by my limited knowledge of the programming languages that drive a blog, such as CSS, PHP, Java or Ajax to name a few but with time and more practice and fiddling I’m slowly gaining a degree of comfort and skill with the mechanics and tools that can make a website come alive.
So what have I been busy with lately?
There’s a new menu located in the rightmost sidebar and about half way down the page:
Available options are as follows:
- Statistics: previously and on a monthly basis I would publish a post listing various stats from the previous month including things like the “Most read post” and “Total visitors” etc… The last couple of days I have been busy changing this so that Blog Statistics are able to be displayed at anytime you choose. By the way I’m very happy with the result and although it will surely undergo further tailoring it basically shows some very interesting numbers and information about the blog but also about you the visitor. What’s really cool (IMHO) is that the stats displayed are all current and represent a true snapshot of this blog’s activity.
- Downloads: in this section various files are available for download to you the visitor; I keep adding more files to the repository.
- Gigs and Presentations: originally located at the top of the screen as a menu item – this options has now been moved.
- Give Aways and Wishlist: this information has also been moved from the top of the screen menu to this new menu.
- A 404 Page with a splash: a 404 page is a special type of web page displayed by all sites when what is being looked for cannot be found. I reckon my 404 page is a cracker and you will have to see for yourself why I call it a “404 page with a splash”!!
Most bloggers are somewhat passionate about their stats and can spend many an hour just staring at the screen watching visitors drop by (or not – whichever the case may be). In the end I had to tailor and combine the features of half a dozen plugins to get what I wanted. There was also some PHP programming involved and a little CSS customisation. I’m very happy with the outcome. With time… I will extend the information and numbers displayed to you and hopefully one day be in a position to display some pretty graphs!!
Here’s what I’m talking about…
