What do India and Papua New Guinea have in common?

A Richard Kendall slideshow night!

We met Richard during the 2008 Goroka Show a few months back. An Australian photographer from Melbourne in town to photograph and experience the splendour of Papua New Guinea Highlands bilas.

We connected with Richard over the weekend after a quick chat in the street on the Saturday morning. We extended an invitation to him to come home to witness and photograph Eli getting decorated (for the 1st time) in traditional Simbu bilas .

The weekend was an overall success and Richard managed to capture a heap of great bilas and singsing shots to take back to Melbourne with him. He mentioned back in September that on return to Melbourne he would sit down, go through and edit the 1000’s of photos he took and eventually organise some form of public display.

To top of Richard’s week we headed into Goroka town on the Tuesday after the Show and we visited two local landmarks: the Chuave Market and also the “infamous” Genoka Settlement. I wanted to give Richard the rare opportunity for him to photograph the hussle an bussle of a betelnut market and also life inside a typical PNG settlement.

Well – to get to the point… Richard is holding a slide show in Melbourne today!!

Wish I was there folks!!!

The invitation I received from Richard the other day for the slideshow evening reads as follows:

Hi everyone,

I have my film premier next Wednesday. 19th
If you’re in town? I would be very happy to see you all there! It’s been a long process, which has become an interesting first effort.

Also I’m exhibiting a slide show of Images collected in India and PNG, there is new stuff from September this year to create an eclectic visual delicacy.
It should be a relaxed atmosphere, so get the tram and have a beer.

If you really can’t make it, the film should be screening for a week at Brunswick st gallery in the following weeks.

Regards Richard

Please RSVP if you can

Join us for the screening of our documentary ‘ The Sea Was Boiling’

There will be a photo exhibition of Richard’s images in India & Papua New Guinea at 7 pm followed by the screening of the documentary at 8 pm. Running time 20 minutes.

This documentary offers an insight into the lives of Chennai’s coastal fishing communities following the devastation of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami.

The world was shocked by the tsunami, and foreign aid agencies and the Indian government flocked to areas like Chennai with relief.

Visiting Chennai more than four years after the tsunami hit, it was clear the quality of life within the fishing communities remained abysmal. So, with all the attention of the Western media attracted by the tsunami and the subsequent relief provided, why weren’t things getting any better?

A documentary by Richard Kendall and Gautam Raju Edited by Linda Maiden.

Please note the event will be a fundraiser for the group Friends of Kolkata. A gold coin donation would be appreciated on entry. http://www.friendsofkolkata.org/
