My time in Sydney slowly draws to an end

As my 5 week holiday slowly draws to an end I am starting to look forward to returning to Goroka. Just like my blood “clan” lives here in Sydney and Brisbane – my “home” at this point of my life is in Papua New Guinea. To sum up the past 5 weeks magnificent!

Six more Sleeps

6 more sleeps before heading back to PNG. 6 more sleeps before being hit over the head with the inverse reverse culture shock hammer. 6 more sleeps to enjoy family and friends. 6 more sleeps before hugging Eli. 6 more sleeps and the start of a new chapter. 6 more sleeps

Madang’s women rugby union season

announcing that the season in Madang for the Rugby Union 7′s begins on the 23rd of May. I have been promised regular updates by the DWU crew which I will periodically post to this blog.

What is it with people?

believe it or not but the most popular search term that finds this blog is “chinese tortures”. What is it with people wanting to find out how other folks have suffered? How have they ended up here? Probably because of this post I did a while back!

10 Contrasts between our two cultures

Living and working in Papua New Guinea has exposed me to a very different and dichotomous culture to our own. Developed versus developing, Sydney versus Goroka and structure versus chaos. Each culture exists as an opposite to the other and I feel like I’m about to travel to a disparate world when boarding that plane at either end

Quick dash up to Brisbane

flew up to Brisbane today with Virgin Blue. It’s my sister’s birthday tomorrow so I’m taking advantage of being downunder and looking forward to spending a couple of days with her. As time flies (just over a week before returning to PNG) – the kilos pile on and there’s a real peril that I will go back a “porker”

Presentation at IBM’s Innovation Center

I met up with my brother John at his workplace last Friday and was asked to give a short presentation to his team and colleagues on Papua New Guinea and the work I have been doing over there as an Australian volunteer

10 days tobacco free!!

it is now 10 days since I stopped smoking – a little on edge and eating like there’s no tomorrow. I reckon that if I was staying on in Sydney – 3 months and I would start looking like a porker. I haven’t eaten this much chocolate since Easter 1965!

My new reading glasses

Been slowly working through a list of things to do in Sydney before I return to Goroka on the 4th of April. There’s the catching up with family and close friends, buying the odd gadget, a bit of banking stuff and of course the mandatory booster vaccinations and general check-ups
