“The School’s Rubbish Tip”

I was cleaning out some of my papers today and stumbled across this poem I wrote way back on the 4th of April, 1981 whilst I was enrolled at Hornsby Technical College studying towards my matriculation for the Higher School Certificate. A few more poems that I wrote all those years ago will eventually follow this one.

Material things are important
to coagulate worries or a frenzied moment,
to disturb inner peace is its duty.
Why not reject this trash and turn to beauty!

Reject this trash and you will visualise
everything else that’s not dull and dirty
you’ll become aware of those happy moments
discard materialism, and your earthly duty!

We’re like a cell that’s selective and permeable,
we’re like a planet that’s part of a system.
Nevertheless here we are,
so make the best of your temporary visit.

If you ever achieve that state of being
in which materialism
has vanished from your seeing,
come and see me so I may learn,
that secret from you,
that one which I unceasingly yearn.
