On our visit to Chuave Station last week I had the opportunity to take a closer look at the local Hospital. From a distance it looks like a functional bit of work tending to the health needs of the Chuave locals but on closer inspection one realises that it’s far from being operational and is only half finished.
The building of the new Hospital was started by local MP Jim Nomane back in 2006 just after he won the Chuave District by-election. Back in those days Mr Nomane showed much promise and potential as a local MP and initiated several projects which would ultimately benefit the people from all over the Chuave District.
Unfortunately the shit hit the fan for Mr. Nomane just after National Elections in 2007 and has since gone into semi-hiding. The well intentioned projects started by the newly elected Chuave MP a few years ago are now sitting there collecting dust whilst the good people of the Chuave District continue to miss out on vital and essential services (eg: Health).
I’m curious about one thing and I’m not wanting to point the finger at Jim but…
Why is it that MP’s (especially PNG MP’s) are given the title “Honourable”? (could this perhaps be a classic example of an oxymoron?) If you have any ideas on the origin of the term “Honourable” then please drop us a line by way of comment below.

Good that you had a look around the station. This hospital project was funded by a donor when Yauwe Riyong was MP in 2004 and Jim Nomane inherited the building in a better form than it appears in the photo. What stands there is just the frame but all the other materials were gone and soon the whole building will be gone. What is sad is that Chuave does not have any plans to improve its health or any other development at all. On the contrary Chuave spent almost 80% of its district development funds from the PGK 5 million allocated. It will be interesting to see where these funds are allocated to.
Stonet
Stonet,
With the front gates wide open – I’m surprised anything is still standing at all! Although we probably won’t see the Hospital finished in the short term – at least the building materials are being put to good local use… better homes for the locals!

I somehow came past this website and just wanted to make a reply to Robert for his comment made on the 12 Nov 2009. Not much to say but I would really want him to take another trip to the Chuave District Hospital and have a look at the status of the Hospital again. If Robert’s a local Chuave, I would like to tell him straight that ol pikinini man tasol save wokim wok ya. I welcome him to the openning of the Chuave District Hospital whenever that is and he should ask himself if he has seen this kind of service ever in the past 20 years? Mora pino
Hi, as far as I am aware Chuave District Hospital remains unfinished without any further construction progress to report.
Robert
Robert,
Didn’t you know that the Chuave District Hospital was a major project funded by the Chuave District JDP&BPC and was nationally tendered in 2009 and Goroka Buiders Ltd had successfully won the contract? Goroka Builders Ltd have done a great work to maintain and complete the run down hospital including the erection of a new Morgue, Ablution block and a Kitchen. To progress buddy, It is now in the hands of the District Administration to fully equip the Hospital with the necessary equipments and machines and officially open the Hospital which will be a great service to the people of Chuave. Just giving you the latest update, as a local I am always physically present at Chuave and not relying on overdue reports and seconhand information.
Thanks for filling in some of gaps and providing an update. I am happy that some progress has been made however, I am also sad to hear that in its current state the “new” hospital is not quite ready to go “live” and provide much needed health services to the decent folks of Chuave and surrounds.
R
Hey Robbo,
Your definitly right that the current status of the Hospital, vital and much needed health services cannot be recieved by the peolple. Well it’s always a lengthy process from getting the paper work done to get funding from the National Government and I believe this phase has already been undertaken and still waiting finalization and approval so as a humble and proud citizen I shall wait paitiently. But so far so good since 80% (construction) of the project is all completed.

What is the truth in the statement that Jim Nomane is a part owner of Goroka Builders and Goroka Builders has ripped Chuave people of much money that can be put to good use?
There is an air of suspicion that the little patch up work on a building that was already standing may have cost the Chuave people dearly. Can the member explain or are there documents available that can reveal the actual costs for doing this patch up work by Jim’s Goroka Builder company?
Mann I think you should really ask the ombudsmen commission to do investigations if you’ve got allegations with the MP regarding this project. I’m just a simple chuave citizen and I am just happy that this project has been lifted since it had been sitting idol for quite a long time. And about the relevant documents, Isn’t it logic to go down to the Chuave District Office and ask the District Administrator for the documents? I’m pretty sure he’ll be more than appreciated to show you.
yal kera do u no my grandad mori rom??
I thought this website was created to share views on the Chuave District Hospital and I don’t see any logic of asking questions whether I know Tom, Dick or Harry. If you wanna go back to history, evryone has a history whether East, West, North or South of Chuave but this aint the point. The point is the Chuave District Hospital so please comment on this issue rathher than bluffing and going out of context.
The Chuave District Hospital was initiated by the former MP Yauwe Riyong as stated by stonnet. After 2004, the building was all in shatters and falling appart being victim to termite infestation and locals pulling down pieces of timber to satisfy their own needs. As Chuave citizens we all should be proud that the current MP has funded the hospital and has brought it to the state in which it is today. Health is a vital service to everyone and time will only tell whether the MP is capable of archieving this project and openning it for the people of Chuave. All eyes are on the MP, the ball is in his cout.
Thankyou Gan Kapu for your comment. I think you have cleared some of the misperceptions. You are exactly spot on that the project is in the MP’s hands to finish and prove to the people of Chuave whether he has achieved something or not. If he does we all are happy, if not well that’s a big question mark. And my brother Norman, this aint a history website, this is a website created to share your comments on the Chuave District Hospital, I give credit to John for clearing you. My Grand Daddy too was a hero in Bomai but if I mentioned his name you wouldn’t have a clue who he was so why should I?
Yaeh,
Please lets not talk about history and who is who and what happen in the past. Presently Chimbu and Chuave is not fortunate enough to be blessed with minerals and oil and gas etc. Chauve thrives on its human resources….the likes of you and I who are blogging right now on he hospital issue. Its a project long overdue and needs to be off the ground ASAP. The District Administrator is very passionate on this himself and he is working on it right now. He had already assigned a brand new land cruiser for the (proposed) Doctor.
Fur us educated Chuaves, we should collectively put our heads together and drive this for our relatives at Chuave.
As the election is round the corner, it will be interesting to see what the present MP Jim Nmane will do do to complete this before 2012.
Health is an important component in people who are subsistence farmers who depend on their own hard work for survival. We are not going to provide food and shelter for them. Every educated Chauve’s duty is to ensure their relatives health is maintained so they can go about every day minding their food gardens and live to sustain their own lives.
Keep the blog healthy and alive so our Chauve people area live and healthy too.
Yeah,
Does anyone know whether the member for Chuave has a web site or email address? Can someone direct him to this blog so we can get some comments and possibly commitment from him on the hospital project? Every Chuave is now paying K12 return trip on a PMV to Kundiawa for treatment and with the present road condition, any patient going to Kundiawa will arrive worse off than he started from Chuave.
K12 is very hard to come by and that’s why people rather stay at home and treat themselves or dies than go to Kundiawa.
That’s reality and let’s faces it and get a completion date for this hospital please 7 year old project.
The District Administrator is extremely close to Jim Nomane, maybe he should shed some light on when he and the member plan to open this and make the much needed service available to the people of Chuave. Can someone draw his attention to this blog for his comments. He has allocated a new landcruiser to a doctor to attact him to Chuave?, well I smell a rat here, are all PNG doctors given a landcruiser as part of their terms and conditions of employment. Guys, he cannot be doing the right thing here, there are better ways to get doctors in, he’ll probably be driving around more than attending to patients, I’ve seen this happen far too many times and I hate to see this happen under my nose!
Maybe Mann may have better alternatives to attract a doctor to Chuave. What are your plans to attract any Doctors into a rural setting like Chuave? Besides, it doesn’t matter if the administrator is a friend or a foe of the current member. The issue here is the people need the service of a professional medical doctor. If you can recollect, since when did Chuave ever in your life time you can recall having a resident Doctor tucked away behind a rock next to the River Wara Mai…..hidden away from the highlands highway? The Chuave people need to remain healthy and strong to sustain their own lives and that’s the best anyone can give to Chuave. Lets not be negative about the issue without providing an alternative solutions to the issue being discussed.
If I were the administrator, I would offer the Doctor a land cruiser 24/7, high covenant house fully rented out free services with 24/7 security and even a 4/7 days working day to attract him to Chuave to serve the 45,000 people of Chuave.
Offer your stakes to the Doctor and you try to bring him in and see what he will ask from you…………!!!!
Hi Kamare Gan or Yar?
For a start, you will know that 99.9% of the Chuave population live past Waramai bridge and you know the condition of that road. People are dying from very simple preventable sickness due to being unable to make it to the hospital. Secondly, putting together all the costs you propose to have a one doctor in Chuave will not result in any good outcome for the people, you will do better to have that money used to care for good health workers, a few of them doing good work and referring very sick to Kundiawa where appropriate medical doctors can offer the type of health care required at that level. The mentality you possess and displayed in your comments is typical PNG’ean attitude. Doctors and all professionals should be paid sufficient money and they should be able to buy their own landcruisers and not be given landcruisers. Where in the world do thay give landcruisers to doctors to work in a hospital, I have not been all over the world but certainly all over Australia and have no knowledge of such gitfts to doctors to work in rural hospitals of Australia. Come off it, this is how money gets abused and the masses do not get to see or experience real services. Come up with better ideas than this one.

Anything to do with the develoment of chuave district should be published on this website. the district hospital is one out of many projects that are yet to take place. anybody can express their view on anything regarding chuave.
Thanks to Mr. Nomane for Funding the district hospital. I, for one, cannot deny the fact that health services is of paramount as bulk of the people leaving in the east, west elimbari and siane would really appreciate that.
However, your next project should be to upgrade the road that links the ‘back page’ with the main highway. that is the only way to bring in the sick people from ‘back page’.
During the weekend I decided to take a trip back home to see family and as I arrived at Chuave gate to have a chew, I could hear many people making comments on the progress of their new District Hospital. I was amazed at how the general public were very pleased and psyched up for the oppening of their new Hospital so I drove down to have a glance for my own. As I approached the main gate it was so pleasing to see that the face had 100% changed and it was so so beautiful than the last time I had visited and I got a real pleasing feeling. I wasn’t allowed to take a stroll inside but the current care taker told me that all machine and equipment had been already put inplace and the final thing was a Kit home out of the three that has been erected already and then preparation for the oppening would commence. Personally as a local I was so pleased and I thanked the caretaker for his briefing and carried on with my journey home, with a taught in my head saying at last we the people of Chuave will have a great hospital….
I am happy to hear that there has been good progress on the Hospital. It has been some time since I was last in Chuave. Any idea when the official opening might be scheduled for?
I have been also getting updates from family and friends back home via phone calls of the hospital but it would be great to see photos or pictures of the current hospital. If anyone could do this would be very great. I can’t wait till June when my field break is and I can travel back home and see for myself, maybe I might be there for the oppening if possible…
Its good to see the new Chuavean hospital is within the proximity of completion. I just travelled home a couple of weeks ago and am quite impressed with the progress. While we may conceive differing opinions and misunderstandings surrounding this development, i am quite content that at least something has finally evolve out of simple ideas. Ideas are the keys to solutions in societal problems today and one has to be more focused, analytical and project a stereoscopic vision on the primary goal of the initiative and that is to serve the people of Chuave. I appreciate this blog site and that the intellectuals from Chuave must convey meaningful disscussions and debates particularly on the major developmental prospects. May I also invite the local MP or his subordinates to produce some light on the current developmental plans onn this forum though June 2012 is around the corner.
Thank you.

I accidentally stumbled onto this website whilst searching for any documented history about our heritage on the net. I stopped for a while and read all the comments, ideas and arguments regarding our hospital. At least I am overwelmed to read that a lot of progress have been made to get the hospital building construction advanced thus far and how I wish for a speedy completion and for the sick to be able to be better treated and cared for. While we may speculate about the administration structure for running the hospital I would like to kindly propose to talk to volunteer organisations overseas to give us doctors for a few years and am wondering if that would be something the District would want to consider, I am not sure. Can someone enlighten me on this please.
Thank you,

I see profound comments and discussions above. Basically the Hospital once complete will be an history to Chuave. Hence first I want to thank former MP Yauwe Riong for the initiative. The completion part of it will be up to the contractor engaged. True it is taking so long to complete but l not blame anyone here because I understand there are reasons behind it. Having been to the vicinity of the Hospital lately (30 08 11) the progress into commissioning is just around the corner. Robert, thanks for the old photo so we can discuss on it.
