Are there any snakes in Papua New Guinea?

I get asked from time to time whether Papua New Guinea has any snakes?  You bet!  Check out the head on this fellow!!

The following photo was taken a couple of weeks ago at Kama whilst we were visiting some of the clan that reside in Goroka town.

Any snakes in Papua New Guinea?

Check out the head on this fellow!

Snake charmers from Kama Village

The local Kama lads that caught the snake

These boys assured me that they were going to set Mr Snake free but as it turns out about an hour after this photo was taken – we noticed the lads walking past us with one of them carrying a white flour bag over his shoulders. And guess what? Yep… the bag certainly wasn’t empty!!  As it turned out – the boys lied to me about setting it free – the snake was destined to end up in the bellies of the three local snake charmers.

For other photos from this visit to Kama Village – including some more of the boys with the snake – please visit the “Kama Village” photo album.
