We received exciting news last night that Duna Elementary School’s application for a Mobile Learning Center (MLC) is successful. Marina van der Vlies – CEO Digicel PNG Foundation – visited the School at West Taraka earlier last week to assess whether the School’s need was sufficient to justify the donation of a Mobile or Community Learning Center.
After a fire totally decimated three class rooms and Eli’s parents home early June 2008 the school has been doing it tough. This donation in kind is proof that manna does fall out of the sky from time to time. To add icing on to the cake this is all going to happen within the next fortnight – not a pledge nor a promise – the real thing. Actions speak louder than words as they say and this generous gesture by the Digicel PNG Foundtion will be remembered and deeply appreciated by the folks from West Taraka for many decades to come.
And to add a little something to that icing – I’ll let you read an excerpt of the email we received from Marina:
“we would like to have a CLC placed at Eli’s pre-school to serve as an extra classroom and a library (Hope Worldwide will donate 200 books). We are looking at delivering it next week and launching it during our next visit to Lae in the week of 18th May”.
This is a very unique event for staff and students of Duna Elementary. It will be the first time that the School (and the West Taraka Community for that matter) will be at the receiving end of such a considerable gift from the international business community.
It’s a shame we don’t see more local money and political interest reach and benefit the rural and settlement folks of this country. Great to know that someone does care!
