Free Downloads

Awhile back a File Downloads section was added to Trupela Tok. Basically a collection of PNG resources and files available to site visitors for free download and access. We have since added additional categories and file types but remain focused on the needs of those locals fortunate enough to have access to the World Wide Web (WWW).

Downloads are currently organised into the following categories:

1. Open Source Software (OSS).
2. PNG Legislation & Forms.
3. Coffee Information.
4. Miscellaneous Files.

When the Downloads facility was originally setup I used a WordPress Plugin called Drain Hole – overall a good choice and continued to serve it’s purpose as a Download Manager quite well. Recently and for some unknown reason Drain Hole just started playing up and although I did investigate possible causes of the issue – I was not able to find a solution.

This site has approximately 40 active plugins at anyone time. Although stable most of the time – “things” do play up occasionally and mostly a solution can easily found – either on a forum or perhaps a fix from the plugin developer him or herself. Considering the complexity and high level of interaction between the core of WordPress and Plugin components – WordPress is a surprisingly stable framework for creating and running all types of websites.  For a list of all the active plugins on this site click here.

The long and the short of it – I ditched Drain Hole for another Download Manager called WordPress Download Monitor. One of the idiosyncrasies of WordPress Plugins is that both developer and community support can come and go. Whilst the plugin is supported and kept up to date – all good and proper – but when support wanes or if the developer just drops out of sight – then one could potentially be stuck with a lemon. This is definitely a concern – as the feel, structure and functionality of a site often rely on these extra add-ons.

I wrote an article a while back comparing running WordPress to owning a British Motorcycle (the older models of course). The need to go under the hood is more often than not and just like with the british motorcycle enthusiast so it is with us WordPress buffs. In the end if you don’t enjoy the art and science of fiddling – you will inevitably go back to something that is boring but reliable – runs well – and does not require the same level of maintenance.
