To virtualize or not to virtualize?

Matt Heaton: The argument AGAINST virtualization

It seems a day doesn’t go by that I don’t see another article written on the virtues of virtualization. For those that don’t know what virtualization means it is technology that allows you to run multiple instances of an operating system on a single server or on top of a system of clustered servers. Virtualization has been around forever. This is the method that many mainframes used to deploy software, but virtualization became popular for desktops/workstations in1998/99 when VMware was first released….

Andy Merrett: At work Twitter usage costing UK businesses £1.4bn a year

If you’re in the UK (and presuming you don’t own your own business) you’re part of a statistic that’s allegedly costing British companies £1.4bn ($2.3bn) each year. The rising popularity of Twitter, probably fuelled by celebrities and TV magazine shows, means that on average 40 minutes each week by each British office worker…

Bring on Ubuntu! I have been running 9.04 on my new grunty machine (dual core processor, 4 gigs ram, 500 gig hard drive, 512 meg nvidia card, 24″ ViewSonic HDMI LCD screen) and it has been a dream! And don’t give me this “but it’s not Window$” guff – my 9 year old uses Mac at school, Window$ at his Mum’s house, and Ubuntu here – he doesn’t even notice the difference. My wife (a Solomon Islander), hasn’t even noticed that it’s not Winblow$ – it’s just a computer. One word of advice though – when you set it up have a decent internet connection, and go to one of those “the perfect Ubuntu desktop setup” sites (Google it), and follow the instructions for adding things like Flash, Adobe Acrobat, etc. , which you would have to do for Windblow$ too.

      Nick,

I ended up with issues around 9.04 on some our older older laptops. For some reason (also reported through the forums) fan and CPU overheating issues. In the end I went back to 8.10. If and when I am ever in a situation again to afford better performing hardware I will certainly be giving the “latest of the best” a workout.
