Sodoma and Gomorra

I have noticed during the relatively short time that I lived and worked in PNG that when people discuss corruption and other issues relating to failed progress that the finger of blame almost certainly gets pointed elsewhere.

Until the average Papua New Guinean realises the role they themselves play in these development “issues” and begin to take responsibility for the present and the future of this beautiful country – all attempts at trying to improve the lot for the average PNG’ean will inevitably fail.

Jealousy and greed are rapidly emerging as a national sickness and both these afflictions lie at the very core of many problems.

In my humble opinion – the social fabric of Papua New Guinea is in a process of collapse – headed towards imminent disaster with the course of history for the next 5 to 10 years – firmly set.

The LNG Project and other extraction initiatives – theoretically meant to bring riches, affluence and other benefits to the people – will only speed up the process of decline and ultimate devastation.

A politician in the Solomon Islands recently announced that ‘poverty breeds corruption’. The latest audit of government finances found that across the board, SBD$433 million (approx. AUD$64 million) was ‘missing’ from the government coffers. I think that the politician has the wrong end of the stick. Corruption breeds poverty.
