Getting a new blog up and running is as easy as one, two and three. There’s probably thousands of new websites coming online each and every day, many the blog variety. Most rear their heads for a mere moment in time – others hang around for a few months or even a year or so – few go the distance.
Trupela Tok is now approaching it’s 6th year of existence. Maintaining and keeping a regular Blog takes a level of discipline, some motivation and good old fashioned consistency. I suppose it’s like most habits – once you get into a routine – a momentum gathers – and eventually we find ourselves cruising down the H’Way on automatic pilot.
Of the top of my head, I could name at least 100 reasons why someone would start a blog but what about those that pack it in?
Why do folks stop blogging? (Alas… A list 10 things about to go into the oven!!)
- Interest: people start a blog with all the best intentions but then just lose interest. Sound familiar?
- Pressure: blogging takes time and energy. Perhaps enough nagging from one’s partner could see someone throw in the towel to appease the partner or family.
- Government: not so much around these parts but outspokenness and freedom of expression have been known to upset governments or the odd chap. A quick phone call or a visit by the men in black can see a blog die a very fast and inconspicuous death.
- Backup: years of work lost just like that! What if an upgrade or something as sinister as an SQL injection utterly destroys all those years of hard work and you just don’t have a backup. Bye bye tweetie!!
- Change: the original purpose why the blog was setup in the 1st place ceases to exist and the author makes an informed decision to close shop. Perhaps a one of conference or meeting etc…
- Death: the most logical and easiest to understand of reasons. The author is busy tapping away at the keyboard one evening and gets really excited as he sees his Google Page Ranking (PR) suddenly jump from a 5 to a 6! The adrenalin rush is just too much and dies of a heart attack!
- Access: the author is forced to move to a geographic location that unfortunately does not have internet. Eg: the past catches up and the author is found guilty of embezzling a rather large sum of money from an old employer. As far as I’m aware jails do not provide the luxury of internet access to those doing a lagging.
- Obsession: after years of blogging 23 hours a day and not sleeping for months nor eating properly – the author understandably suffers from a nervous breakdown and is committed to an institution after going totally mad. After being denied access to the WordPress Panel, the author slips into a permanent stupor and can now be seen sitting by the window repeating “WP Version 3.0″ over and over again”.
- Greed: Matt Mullenweg (Mr. WordPress) sells out to Microsoft! In protest 1000′s of avid WordPress afficionados resign in mass and make a solemn pledge to never go anywhere near another blog again!
- Fortune: fortune sees the author win a couple of “Bil” in El Gordo and luck has it that he or she is now too busy lapping up the life of luxury and indulgence to even think about the tedious and mundane existence of blogging.
Can you think of any other reasons?
If you semi enjoyed the lighter side of this article you’ll probably get a laugh from the following post I wrote a while back: “10 Ways that WordPress has changed my life“.

Google sent me here when I asked him why I had stopped blogging !
Reason 6 is my favorite :)
And why did you stop blogging?
