Eastern Highlands Student Association Fundraising Dance

Last night I got talked into going to a dance by Eli. The dance was organised by the Eastern Highlands Students Association from UNITECH and was held at the “Highway Inn” in Lae.

My 1st PNG night club and I won't be in a hurry to go back to one !

The 1st couple of hours were nice enough but after a little while both Eli and myself started to get a little edgy and basically wanted to get the puck out. But there was a problem! The buses weren't scheduled to ferry students back to campus until at least 2:00am. I sort of had a bit of a winge and in line with good old fashioned PNG hospitality : somehow someone managed to organise a lift back for us earlier than the scheduled buses.

I danced (yeehaaah), I mixed and I was generally having a great time but as soon as the consumption of alcohol started to “kickin” things started to get pretty debauched and this combined with the smoke and noise I had basically had enough by around 11pm. There would have been a time in my past when you would have had to kick me out at closing time and then I would have continued drinking well after day break (and then some).

Maybe I'm mellowing….  finally !!!

PNGers sure know how to party - believe you me - especially when there is alcohol involved. And as detached and “frigid” as they appear in public, once the beer starts flowing and the night progresses - the total opposite holds true. I witnessed more physical contact between males and females over a three hour period than I have the whole 12 months that I have been here.

No photos taken on the night - sori tru.
