Colleagues and friends,
Time for me to signoff and say goodbye.
It has been 21 months since I landed at Nadzab to take up a volunteer
posting here at UNITECH within the Department of Business Studies. My
time in Lae has been colourful to say the least and I will be leaving
with many fond memories of my trials and times in the Land of the
Unexpected.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of you
for showing me the true nature of PNG hospitality and friendship. Your
kindness and happiness will be remembered for many years to come.
For those of you wanting to read more about my PNG adventures or would
like to stay in touch you may do so via my website at www.schilt.info or
email address : rschilt@hotmail.com.
God bless.
Robert Schilt

Hey mate,
You have been a wonderful mate, always ready to say hi and chat. You
understood the nature of our people and accepted us even though we do have
many shortfalls in our ways. I was privileged in meeting you and Anthony
even for a short while. I will always remember you and cherish a good mate's
friendship. Wherever you go, should we meet, you will always be my friend.
Thank you for your services in Papua New Guinea. You have been a great
Ambassador of your country and that has been wonderful. If we had more
friends like you, Anthony and Geoff, there would be no colour differences.
Thank you and see you around. Bye for now only!!!
Your friend,
John

Colorful that is good. I am sure you will get a few colorful responses too.
The people here are into goodbyes, but not to keen on keeping the valuable
ones, like yourself ! I will be lucky to last the time that you did. My hat
goes off to you. Good on ya
Wish you well mate.
Cheers

Goodbye Mr Schilt. Thank you for your generous contributions towards PNG's nation building through the development of our young png students here at Unitech. May God bless you richly for this and hope you have a Joyful Christmas and a prosperous 2007.
Joy S. from DODL on behalf of female staff of Unitech.
Rob,
You truly made it your business to learn by being part of PNG - I mean, not being at a distance looking at PNG while in the country. You would have noticed how we appreciated you because we saw you were genuine.
We have problems and shortcomings but at least we are happy and, if we can, we seriously go out to make others feel at home unless they decide otherwise.
We thank you and salute you for your genuineness and willingness to learn about us despite our differences and difficulties.
I wish you every successful and would be more then happy to be included in you mailing list for any interesting topic you may wish to share.
You have a blessed christmas and prosperous new year.
Robert
Hi Robert,
Thank you for your very moving, parting words.
You are different from our many visitors, because you did not allow our many problems and our short comings to prevent you from enjoying your brief stay here as you also contributed in the so important task of our human resource development.Instead you chose to integrate your self into our communities and culture, and indulge in many of our(bad ?) habits such as wantok system, chewing buai, leaving droppings behind us (and getting spot fined) walking barefoot( thongs are expensive) and roaming freely in our settlement communities - many are said to be notorious (W/ Taraka etc..)
When you decided to come here - you decided to leave Australia where it was and is and you came to PNG.(PNG can't be Australia and Australia can't be PNG for that matter.)
Thank you for being a worthy guest. You may take many fond memories with you but you will also leave a legacy behind.Come next year the vendors and other marketers at Madang Market will be asking …” dispela waitman igo wea?..” but all good things must end…
so goodbye wantok and thank you for being part of us. This is a small world but desires are wide - so who knows you might return ….
May I take this opportunity to wish you every success in all your current and any future endeavors.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
