I had scheduled to go into one of the local Internet cafes three times a
week for the purpose of emailing and also some blogging. This was going to
be the arrangement until I had organized my own personal ISP subscription or
the Hospital had something in place. Theoretically, all well and good. Today
was a scheduled email/blog day so into Goroka town I head just before lunch.
If there is one thing that I find difficult, that is adjusting to a change
of plan or having to let go of an expectation around something. Perhaps a
weaker part of my character and considering that I live and work in PNG,
definitely a source of continued frustration and stress.
One hour and K26 ($12) later, I had only managed to send two emails and post
zilch articles to the blog. The inside of my head was rapidly starting to
resemble and feel like one of those Escher drawings. By the end of the hour
I was worked up and somewhat pissed. I did what I do so well. cut of my nose
to spite my face. I charged up to the counter swearing and mumbling. Paid
what I owed for the hour and in the process told them what they could do
with their Internet connection. I must be suffering from a reasonably
serious case of broadband withdrawal.
Took me most of the day to settle down.
So now what?
Plan B - of course!
The Institute of Medical Research (IMR) is located next door to the Hospital
and has recently installed a broadband connection. I met their IT Manager
yesterday and as it turns out IMR are happy to allow certain hospital staff
to use their internet connection in the short term. IMR are located right
next to the Hospital grounds. I'm in!
Hopefully - I won't have to investigate Plan C!

G'day Rob
Having just read about your frustrations with the Internet, I thought I would respond with my 24MB broadband connection to say simply “I wish I was there to see it”.
Whilst you have probably developed some patience while in PNG, I could just see the jugular swelling in your neck and pity help any so-and-so who dared get in your way.
Stay well ol buddy.
Tony
Sympathies Rob, I too find disruptions to plans or goals a tad upsetting. But Plan B sounds like a far better solution than Plan A anyway. Its great to read your life up there, thanks Rob.
