It’s not all fun and games here in PNG and there are times
when I not only get frustrated but very angry as well. My threshold for
patience and withstanding “PNGisms” is continually stretched.
back a little over a week ago:
1) Not having ready access to internet and email.
2) Queues, queues and queues!
3) Seeing a mentally handicapped woman that hangs around the
hospital grounds get stoned by a group of kids.
4) Reading in yesterday’s newspaper how the government has
approved a multi-million dollar hotel development in Moresby and given the
contract to a North Korean Company granting them the benefit of zero tax for
the next 10 years. (This one really pissed me off).
5) The preacher down at the local market.
6) Seeing plenty of white folks getting around in there
“fancy” cars and not bothering to mix with the locals (Only god knows why!).
7) The urban sprawl of filth.
8) PNG Politicians taking their own country folk for a ride
(and filling up their own pockets in the process).
9) There is no running water in the house between 10pm and
7am.
10) The ridiculously high price of my favorite cheese at the
local supermarket and the fact that as yet, I haven’t come across any Weet-bix.

The Korean company may pay no tax - but I am sure they are investing their capital and developing the hotel… this means jobs for many local people… they can then afford to send their kids to school (and perhaps build a house), so that they may learn a trade and get a good job and earn some money get married and have some kids and build a home… Building a new home means ojbs for a few more people…
Not bad, eh ! just got to look at the big picture sometimes to see the effect of a seemingly silly short term decision….
Perhaps not a bad decision at all…
