I can be found most afternoon’s strolling the streets of West Goroka. I have a soft spot for street boys and there’s lots of them hanging around the West Goroka shops. I inevitably stop for a chat or a chew or both. Some sell buai or smokes, others sell band-aids, batteries or clothes. Anything really, anything that sells. In PNG survival is difficult and the street sellers do their best to make an extra few bucks.
One of the things I abhor is when street sellers get raided by the cops. I have seen women and kids get bashed, people hit with sticks and clubs. In the process their little markets or goods get either destroyed, confiscated or distributed amongst the crowd. This afternoon at West Goroka I got caught up in one such raid - two coppers walking down and systematically destroying street markets - the usual stuff. The next thing a boy does the bolt, running away as fast as he can away from the shops. The next thing, cops and army dudes jump in their vehicles and start chasing the getaway lad. I tell you - it doesn’t take much to get the attention of a PNG crowd. Within moments half of West Goroka was on the run - chasing the police cars -chasing the boy.
The chase is on… (in the early days I would run in the opposite direction - nowadays I’m curious like the rest of them!)

When the police caught up with him - he was told to jump the fence or else!!

Nabbed…!!

Of to the “wollopa” shop for some panel-beating… (Not sure why but the dude in the Jesus cap looks really happy)

An that ladies and gentlemen is what they call free entertainment - PNG style!!
Doesn’t cost a cent!
