Most ballot boxes were transported back to the central counting area on the same day that polling took place (9/7/07). Others, especially ballot boxes from the rural areas took a little longer. Polling took place last week Monday (9/707) and counting starts tomorrow (17/707).
Ballot boxes arriving at NSI…
That is over one week, ballot boxes just sitting there idle - waiting
to be counted! There is a whole hoard of supporters from Eastern
Highland that have converged on Goroka. The counting place is the
National Institute of Sports (NSI) which is just around the corner from
where we live. A whole economy has emerged around the front gates of
NSI - untold groups of supporters that just waiting outside - buai,
smoke and food stalls have sprouted up all along the surrounding
streets.
I managed to snap some shots out the front of NSI as the ballot boxes were being brought back from the polling stations. These can be viewed in the “PNG Elections 2007” photo album.
