After about 5 weeks of PNG election shenanigans and the associated violence
especially in rural areas we made it back to “Wara-Guma” yesterday. With the
two ITShare volunteers being on board for a few weeks we thought it an
opportune time to travel to Kaubasis and share the village experience with
our two Australian friends.
The CEO of the Hospital - Dr. Apa, allowed us to use his vehicle yesterday
to travel to the village. The timing was perfect as we had a bunch of stuff
to take back to the “Hut” in preparation for Mum's visit in a few weeks
time. Kitchenware, cups, cutlery, curtains and bedding, a couple of kerosene
lamps, a jerry can for water and enough food for Eli and Mama Olgan as the
two were staying on for a few days to straighten up the garden and also the
inside of the house.
To walk or drive into a PNG village is an unbelievable experience. Although
I have lost track of how many times I have done the village visit, it gets
to me every time. The hospitality and the friendliness of the locals are
second to none and I laugh within when I reflect on the perception that
folks have back at home of this country.
The “Hut” is basically ready and is now liveable. Interestingly, I have yet
to stay over a night, in a way I'm nervous - the idea of sleeping and eating
in my very own Simbu residence - feels kind of weird. Like a new level of
something - a new experience - perhaps more surrender.
One thing I know for sure… sharing all of this with Mum when she gets here
in a few weeks is going to be magic.
The “crew” at the entrance of the “Hut” (with John and Karl from ITShare) as we were leaving to head back to
Goroka…
