Six more Sleeps

6 more sleeps before heading back to PNG. 6 more sleeps before being hit over the head with the inverse reverse culture shock hammer. 6 more sleeps to enjoy family and friends. 6 more sleeps before hugging Eli. 6 more sleeps and the start of a new chapter. 6 more sleeps

The family gathers at Umina

On Sunday the family had the rare opportunity to all be in the one place at the one time. Although Eli and young Peter were missing on the day – the rest of us connected and we shared precious moments that will be remembered for many years to come

The day I met Abraham

At 2:10am this morning I finally met Abraham. Despite the build up and anticipation it turned out to be a bit of a non event. In fact I was fast asleep when the old man with the long white beard finally came to visit me

One week back in Sydney

Been in Sydney for one week now and I’m having a fantastic time. Seeing family and friends after being away for two years is beyond words. Although a new chapter is slowly unfolding for me in PNG for me – as I spend time with the family here in Sydney I realise who and where my “true” clan are. One week down and three more to go!

Seven days back in Sydney

the last 7 days have been excellent! Although flat out catching up with people and slowly getting through my “To Do” list – there have been ample moments in between to put my feet up and chill out. As I was devouring a double gelato the other day and relishing the magic of the moment I also realised how contented I am living away from the “west” and modern civilisation

10 Things I like about being back in Sydney

Been back in Sydney now for 3 days and its been absolutely superb. This is the third time I have returned “home” since moving to PNG in early 2005. Each trip has had it’s own twist or flavour with different personal reactions to the external and internal nuances of each culture. In a way it feels like I have moved from one end of the spectrum to the other – the contrasts in culture and custom between the two places is difficult to put into words or description

Sunday BBQ at Fagan Park

To celebrate a bunch of birthdays and several other milestones (including my 50th) my family have organised a gathering and BBQ at Fagan Park next Sunday, 8th of March 2009. We will get started at 11:00am and probably go through until around 4:00pm. Food and drinks wise it’s basically BYO everything

Eagle has landed in Sydney!

after a 4 hour flight from Moresby – I landed safely in Sydney last night. Was met by Mum, John, Yolande, Jackson and Maxi – it is tops to see and hug my family again. It’s nice to be in Sydney again and having a rest from the intensity and overwhelm of PNG. At the moment taking Mum’s ADSL2 connection for a bit of a test run magic!!

Joy and sadness wrapped into one

my forthcoming sojourn to Oz is both a joyous and a sad occasion. Yep I’m over the moon to be seeing my family and close friends again after more than two years. Incredibly sad that Eli will not be there to share the experience. Whilst I’m carrying the joy and sadness (50/50) – Eli is 100% sad (and upset). Sori tru Eli!

The axe handle behind my front door

he axe handle that normally sits behind our front door got a work out the night before last. After getting woken up at 2:00am by loud music from our inconsiderate neighbours – I jumped out of bed like a raging bull – grabbed the axe handle and went absolutely berserk. I swung that bit of wood and yelled like a mad man for 3 full minutes. Luckily no one was hurt apart from the fence and a few trees. Interestingly the loud music stopped quicker than what you can say “kakaruk”
