Papua New Guineans and trust

Trust is one of those qualities of human relationship and interaction that is essential for families, communities and ultimately nations to not only prosper but also to survive. In any civil society and at some level, somewhere-somehow trust and confidence in the people that one interacts with must exist or else the social fabric starts to self destruct…

Papua New Guineans have a great sense of humour

One of the special traits about melanesian culture is the element of human interaction. Also, if one is lucky enough to have a house in a town somewhere - as we do - there will never be a shortage of family or clan members needing a place to crash for day or two (or more) that coming knocking on the front gate…

A first for Papua New Guinea!

Wordpress 2.6 has been released within the last few hours and it’s probably fair to say that I will probably become the first self hosted WP blogger in PNG to run on latest version. (Are there any other self hosted bloggers in PNG?).

The perception of a Papua New Guinean friend…

Here's an interesting email I received from a Papua New Guinean friend of mine a couple of weeks ago…Hi Rob,The 'trupela.com' blog fits perfectly with the kind of person you are. You would be surprised how many people know you or have at least seen you and have had more admiration for your 'Dr. Kaupa version of a 'Whiteman.' On the weekend I was listening to a man from Wabag…

The "Hut" is coming to life…

I headed to Kaubasis today to check on the progress of the “Hut”. Uncle Joel and “crew” have been very busy and building is almost complete. The structure is up, the roofing is finished and the walls and ceilings are almost there. The next item on the agenda are the doors and windows. Three doors all up, front entrance and two bedrooms. As far as windows - I think we…

Almost a village visit!

We left home at around 8:30am this morning and were planning to catch a PMV
from the main markets and head out to the village at Kaubasis. We had
arranged to meet Uncle Joel at the “Hut” and pay for some cane matting made
by one of the locals which is to be used for the walls and ceilings. We
waited at the markets for around an hour and a half for a PMV…

Internet in PNG…

Is slow and expensive!

I have been signed up with Datec; one of the four local ISP's offering
dialup services, for a couple of months. And just to give you an idea of the
cost involved.

I'm on what they call a Biznet Flexible Plan which allows a download of
400Mb per month and costs me K320 per month (AU$150). For excess usage I get
charged an additional 80t (AU35c) per Mb. To top it off…

The Two Kina Hold-Up !

Yesterday we travelled to Kaubasis in Simbu; we managed to leave home at around 7:30am as we wanted to be back in Goroka before dark. After a little confusion at the main markets trying to organize a PMV (fairly normal) we finally departed town for Eli’s village…

Back in Goroka.

With all my material possessions (literally) in tow I arrived back safely in Goroka last night after spending a week in  Lae. I was lucky enough (or perhaps unlucky enough) to get a lift back in the truck. Lucky enough because I was able to keep an eye on my things as they traveled up the highway but unlucky enough to experience traveling in a truck cabin with four grown…

Presentation last night…

Was a success !

Anthony and myself “performed” to a packed house at Duncanson Hall last
night and the response from the students (crowd) was very positive.

It was also nice to give something back to the students for their
enormous effort in organising and participating in the 2006 UNITECH
Cultural Show.

By the end of the night we would have shared approximately 300 photos.
Amongst these pictures were some great portraits of…
